Lost Review for February 14, 2008

Well - another good episode. So far this season has been strong and stayed strong. The focus was on Sayed, who apparently has turned into an assassin for Ben after leaving the island.

We finally begin to see Locke start to lose it a bit. Notice though that he found the line of... sand maybe? I remember that had been around the cabin before. So does the cabin move? Also - doesn't the line of sand remind you of what wizards use to keep devils/demons in line? That's probably a bit of a stretch, but I couldn't think of any other reason for the sand.

The other huge revelation was the scientific experiment. We got a major clue as to one of the mysteries of the island. Apparently it lies in the future. Kinda. I mean - the scientist dude was talking to the girl on the boat in real time. So the sound waves had no problem traveling, but the rocket was affected. It's also interesting to note that the time difference is minor - I think I heard 31 minutes. So it's not like they are traveling in time - but just that the island is... 'broke' from reality.

Did you notice how the man on the golf course reacted to Sayed? Almost as if he was terrible luck (which he was, of course).

As for Sayed working for Ben... I'm not sure what to think. I still think the bad guys are Dharma, and we know that the Island doesn't like Dharma (it ordered Ben to wipe them out), but I wonder why?

Oh - and Sawyer had a little screen time today - but it was very well done. Unlike Locke, Sawyer made a real case for why they could stay on the island. I was pretty darn impressed by it.

Any other thoughts?

Comments
Scott P's Gravatar Agreed - excellent season so far.

The golf course was in a different place than when we later saw Sayid, remember the snow he picks up after he meets the girl? So was he there specifically to kill that guy at the course? Maybe the guy figured that out after he heard who he was.
On the clocks, I thought he was holding the clock from the rocket in his right hand which would mean the island is 31 minutes behind time.

What about the secret closet with multiple passports and money? Sayid is heading to the boat so if he meets up with Ben's man, maybe that is how he gets started working for him. He sees/learns who they are and they are bad then agrees to help Ben track and kill them.

We know about these folks getting off the island - ben would make 7 unless they said he was on the flight. It would also seem to exclude Juliet and Desmond.
Jack
Kate
Sayid
Hurley
Who do you think the other two are going to be?

Raymond Camden's Gravatar I don't think Ben counts as one of the 6 - becuase they always call them the "Oceanic 6", which implies survivors of the Oceanic flight, which Ben was not.

You may be right about the island being in the past, but again, with it being so short, it seems more like a break than a time travel thing.

As for the secret closet - i just assumed that as Ben was leading the others, he would have stuff they didn't need. But... he wasn't the leader of the original crew, he was just a janitor. So why would he have those supplies now.

Shoot. How did they get the doctor chick on the Island. I mean - one of my main theories is that the bad guys are Dharma, trying to get back on after the purge. But Juliet came after the purge. She was recruited and brought it. So _someone_ is working for Ben on the outside.

Scott Stroz's Gravatar A couple of things (in no particular order).

1. How did Myles get a picture of Ben? I think, given the passports and what appeared to be currency from different countries, Ben travels from the island.

2.I believe the guy who recruited Julliet is the guy who was the leader of 'Others' who Ben encounters on the island as a child.

3. The physicist tells the helicopter pilot to make sure he uses the same bearing when leaving the island. Didn't they tell Michael and Walt the same thing when they left in the boat?

4. What has happened to Michael and Walt?

Raymond Camden's Gravatar 1) I agree. Ben gets on and off easily probably - well - maybe not so easily now that the sub is gone.

2) You are right. This other group - who are not Dharma - are something else. All except Juliet. Or if not all (we can maybe assume other folks came in later as well) at least most.

3) Yes they did.

4) Personally I think they are fine.

Scott Stroz's Gravatar As for Sayed and the people he was hired to kill.

1. The guy got scared when Sayed told him who he was. How is it that the guy knew of Sayed enough to know to be afraid of him, but not so much to know what he looked like? They made it seem like the Oceanic 6 were kind of worldwide celebrities. Doesn't add up.

2. Here is a thought on Michael and Walt. When they escaped the island, they stayed low key, maybe not even going back to the US. But when the others appeared, they came out of hiding, maybe even being shunned a bit for not coming forward sooner. So Michael and Walt are the other 3 from Oceanic 6...long shot, I agree, but plausible.

3. Here is another long shot. Ben's 'guy' on the boat is Michael (or Walt).

Raymond Camden's Gravatar I disagree with 1 - I think there are plenty of 'celebs' who you can forget their face. Remember, these guys would NOT be like Britney Spears. They would be celebs for a while then mostly forgotten.

2) I definitely think M/W stayed low key. I don't think they ever came out though.

Alex's Gravatar What about Ben telling Sayed that "You want me to keep protecting your friends, right"? It looks like Sayed is being blackmailed into killing to keep Ben from spilling in the beans about the people that were left on the island, etc.

What really piques my interest is how Ben, after having been raised on the Island, has all of the resources he does. If he exterminated all of the "old" Dharma crew, then where does he get money, passports, clothes, a sub, etc? It's certainly NOT Dharma! I can't help but think that Ben is working for a US gov't agency of some kind, or some entity OTHER than Dharma. Perhaps Penny Widmore's dad? Didn't they find a dead guy in a hot air balloon the island, where the basket was made by Widmore Industries?

Alex's Gravatar Also, as for Naomi and the guy that went to visit Hurley in the psych ward, they have the scent of being CIA/US gov't ops, NOT Dharma. When Naomi was given the mission to put the team together to go to the island, she was standing in a completely empty office space with one desk in it. This is textbook cliche for how the CIA operates...lease out some office space for a fake front company and leave it empty except for one desk!

Jeffry Houser's Gravatar Regarding the ring of "Sand" or whatever it was. I assumed it was somehow trapping Jacob, presumably either a ghost or spirit or demon or something. All it takes i one little "break" in the circle to let the spirit free.

I would guess that Ben 'freed' Jacob at some point.before getting caught as part of his "battle" with Locke.

Scott Stroz's Gravatar I knew there was something I was forgetting earlier. Naomi's bracelet. The chick Sayed fell in love with was wearing the same kind of bracelet as the one he took off Naomi. There was a message on it that read , ""N, I'll always be with you. R.G."

I would assume this means that the same people who are running the show on the freighter were to same ones who wanted to kill him in the flash forward.

Also, why was the pilot insistent on the physicist hang up if Minkowski got on the phone?
# Posted By Scott Stroz | 2/15/08 6:25 PM
Andy Matthews's Gravatar My thought is that the bracelet that Elsa was wearing was given to her by Sayid. It's probably the same once that Naomi had.
# Posted By Andy Matthews | 2/16/08 11:27 AM
Scott Stroz's Gravatar But why would it be signed "RG"? Its not like Sayid was trying to conceal his identity.
# Posted By Scott Stroz | 2/16/08 11:29 AM
Raymond Camden's Gravatar I don't know - seems kind of morbid. Also - there was an inscription on the bracelet. Now I may not know much about girls - but i do know I would never give jewelry to a girl that had an inscription on it mentioning someone else.

Andy Matthews's Gravatar Good point...

I get the feel that he was with Elsa for at least a month or two...surely he would have noticed the bracelet before the day he killed her. He was looking at it in sort of remembrance.

Maybe Sayid already had a bracelet like Naomi's? That's why he looked at Naomi's so oddly.

Scott P's Gravatar Daniel makes an interesting observation about the light scattering on the island strangely. Like many others on Lost, his name is taken from history - Michael Faraday.

Faraday studied the magnetic field around a conductor carrying a DC electric current, and established the basis for the magnetic field concept in physics. He discovered electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism and electrolysis. He established that magnetism could affect rays of light and that there was an underlying relationship between the two phenomena. His inventions of electromagnetic rotary devices formed the foundation of electric motor technology, and it was largely due to his efforts that electricity became viable for use in technology.

He wrote in his notebook, "I have at last succeeded in illuminating a magnetic curve or line of force and in magnetising a ray of light"

Andy J's Gravatar When it comes to Walt I figured they wrote him out due to the fact that on the island its only been 100 days but in real life the show has been going 3/4 years. You can get away with this with older actors but Walt was around 11/12 when he filmed Lost and is now 15 years old.

Andy J's Gravatar After my last comment I looked into this properly

"When asked about the production difficulties associated with Walt and possible appearances of the character in the fourth season, co-creator Damon Lindelof stated, "We've always known Malcolm was going to grow faster than we could shoot the show. And we planned for it. Trust us. Please trust us. You'll see [Walt] again. But you're gonna have to be patient. Sorry."
