Lost Review for February 28, 2008

All in all - my least favorite episode of the season, but that's mainly because the other episodes were simple amazing. What really bugged me about this episode was the ending - specifically the 'lovers call'. When it began to cut back and forth between Desmond and Penny - I about barfed. I mean I get it - they have a great love - and it is important - but that scene was just a bit too cutesy for me.

So let's pretend it didn't happen and focus on the big reveals this week. One thing interesting about this season - it is really giving out the goods. You have to admit that. What did we learn?

1) We now know what's around the Island. Some kind of "storm" that causes a time distortion.

2) What's odd is that it doesn't seem to be time travel per se. It is more a 'conscious' time time where your brain travels. However - how does that account for the rocket being physically delayed? And the helicopter? That may be an issue of route. Perhaps if you travel the right route, you get shifted in time. If you don't travel the right route - you get 'breaks' like we saw in Desmond, and the other guy on the boat.

3) Hanso!! Black Rock!! (By the way, I'd kill for that painting.) We haven't heard Hanso since season 2, when Locked watched the training video, and the Black Rock hasn't really been around since season 1. (I may be remembering wrong - did Locke visit the Black Rock last year?) Anyway - it was cool to hear those names again, especially Hanso.

4) What's the guy from CSI doing on Lost, eh? Don't networks frown on that? (Talking about the doctor.)

5) Who is Ben's inside man on the boat? We didn't see too many people, so I think it has to be one of the men we saw.

6) This may explain a bit more about why only 6 people got off the island. I mean - if it takes a special route to get in and out, it could be very difficult to find. Note too the flippant comment of one of the sailors - something about being off Fiji 'last time they checked'. It has a Bermuda Triangle feel to it.

Did anyone catch the name of the boat? I think it was clear enough to read, but it went a bit too quick for me.

Comments
Scott P's Gravatar might have been my favorite episode. I liked the jumping around and how faraday sent himself a message along with the fact that he had Desmond listed in his journal.

I must have missed the painting - I'll go back and re-watch for it.

Faraday was talking to a female on the boat when he had her fire the rocket. We haven't seen her yet.

In the previews for next week, Jack is standing in the rain and shoots his gun. I'm wondering if he accidentally shots Claire.

This episode reminded me of the 84 movie, Philadelphia Experiment where the navy was playing with time travel.

Scott Stroz's Gravatar I am not so convinced that the storm causes the time distortion, the other way around, or if they are completely unrelated. It does rain frequently on the island so them flying into a storm was not unexpected.

Faraday made a comment about it being Jack's perception of how long ago the helicopter left. This is something like what I have talked about before.

I say enough with Sayeed's MacGyver-like skills. it's not even close to believable that he could put a phone together with that garbage and have it make a crystal clear ship-to-shore, international telephone call.

If it was daylight where they were on the boat, wouldn't it have been the middle of the night in the UK? Why was Penny's house all lit up like she was expecting company?

Raymond Camden's Gravatar ScottS: Your last point - if she knew a 'special' phone call was coming in - I can see her staying up late anxiously waiting.

ScottP - Didn't someone else get accidentally shot before? Seems like they've done that before. And as for the movie, ScottS and I were talking about this, but I said it reminded me more of the Final Countdown, where the aircraft carrier goes through a storm and ends up in the 40s.

Scott Stroz's Gravatar If she knew a "special" phone call was coming, why did it take like 20 rings before she answered?

Raymond Camden's Gravatar She had to crap. Really, really, bad.

Jeffry Houser's Gravatar I thought this episode was much stronger than last week's.

Penny was wearing a wedding ring (According to my GF), which puts a different spin on the lover's call.

I recall Mr Widdemore being mean to Desmond, but he didn't seem to act so in this case.

Sawyer killed Locke's father at Blackrock. I thought that was last season. They also went to Blackrock to get the "Explosives" for the surprise attack on The Others (Also last season).

Ana Lucia shot Shannon accidentally in Season 2 accidentally.

Ben gave Michael and Walt specific coordinates + route to follow to get off the island. Anyone remember what they are? And if they are related + similar to the coordinates that the helicopter was following?

Isn't Michael supposed to be back this season? Could Michael be Ben's contact on the boat?

My GF is guessing that the island is time shifted, existing slightly ahead or slightly behind the the rest of the world. It is easy to poke holes in that theory, since radio waves seem to pass easy. Obviously something something time related is going on.

Traditionally, each episode has equated to 1 day on the island, right? Season 3 ended on December 23rd, 2004. Yet, this episode took place on December 24th, 2004. Is this because this season isn't following one day per episode? Or did Desmond + Sayid move back in time a couple days?

Michael Brennan-White's Gravatar I thought it was a much stronger show than last week. I am getting tired of Kate or maybe because the flashbacks are a better plot device.

I think Ben's contact on the freighter is Michael and that is who left the door open to the Sick Bay.

Farraday is a whack job but he does add a missing element to this season's shows.

Could the composition of the members of the Oceanic Six be the losties who were far enough away when the hatch exploded. Wouldn't that include Jin, Sawyer and Sun?

6dust's Gravatar Forgot about the door in the sick bay... good point. Before that, I was thinking the now dead radio guy was Ben's contact. He had said something about being the only one with access to the radio room...

We know four of the Oceanic Six now, correct? Jack, Kate, Hurley, and Sayid. Possibly a fifth (if you can count Erin), but since he wasn't born yet, I don't think he counts. But we also know Ben is back, so there could be other non-Oceanic survivors that make it back...

All in all, one of my favorite episodes.
